Devinition of Descriiptive text

A descriptive text is a text which lists the characteristics of something (Ahmad, Zahrowi, 2009).
Descriptive text is a kind of text with a purpose to give information (Mursyid, M. PW, 2011).
Descriptive text is a text which illustrates people, something, or a place. It is aimed to describe something specificly (Masruri, M, 2010).  

The Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

 The generic structure of descriptive text

1. Identification
    It is a part of paragraph which introduces or identifies the character.
2. Description
    It is a part of paragraph which describes the character.

The generic structure of descriptive text consists of identification and description.
Identification: Identifies phenomenon to be described.
Description: Describes parts, qualities, characteristics, etc.

The Example of Descriptive Text

Bongo the Orangutan
Identification
There is an orangutan in the Bandung Zoo. People call her Bongo. She comes from a dense forest on the island of Kalimantan.
Description
She has physical features similar to human. Bongo has brownish fur and walks with two feet. Bongo is almost as big as human. She is a mammal that means she gives birth to her children and breast feeds them.

The Language Features of Descriptive Text

Descriptive often uses 'be' and 'have'.
Tense which is often used is Simple Present Tense. However, some times it uses Past tense if the thing to be described doesn't exist anymore. (Mursyid, M. PW, 2011)

The formula of present tense
Positif    : S + V1 (s/es)
Negatif    : S + DO/DOES + NOT + V1
Tanya    : DO/DOES + S + V1

Positif    : S + be + adj/adv
Negatif    : S + be + NOT + adj/adv
Tanya    : be + S + adj/adv
